THE EXHIBITION

Between the 3rd December 2008 and 11th January 2009, the Triennale in Milan will host the exhibition “ALER Milan: 100 years of public housing”.

The exhibition has been conceived as a “story” of the evolution of the institute and its goals, in a chronological order and with 3 different potential interpretations / layers of meaning:

  1. quality of building: the evolution of the different technologies, the building techniques, the management, the materials, from reinforced concrete to prefabricated structures and complements, etc.
  2. quality of housing: change and development of the entity “home” as a result of the changes in the different typologies of housing, as shown in the context of: international studies on the subject, the family structure (numbers and necessities), the lack of spaces, etc.
  3. social integration: modules, shape and functionality in the planning of districts of the city from the beginning of the century, according to the characteristics of the society.

The contents have been developed “chronologically” in a parallel and synergic way for each period, focusing on key years, and in relation to main events and personalities in the history of Italy and Milan who might have influenced them. Explanation panels, display units with original documents, short films and slide shows enrich the exhibition explaining each period in a didactic fashion.

Three double central “isles” host 6 scale plastic models created and refurbished for this occasion:

  • a section model in scale 1:10 of one of the buildings in the via Solari estate, courtesy of Società Umanitaria (an example of early '900 developments)
  • a model in double scale of the Vittoria District (1:1000 and 1:200), an example of the idea of district during the '30s
  • the original refurbished scale model of the Comasina District
  • a plastic model of the Gratosoglio District, a development that can be compared to the big European urbanistic experiments
  • a model in double scale of the Muggiano District (1:1000 and 1:200), an example of integrated planning of residential units and services
  • the plastic model of the Programme of Urban Regeneration Pieve Emanuele, an example of regeneration of a disadvantaged and de-structured area.
